If I was to pick an area of weakness for Arsenal, it would be the small amount of midfielders at the club. Beyond Fabregas, Hleb, Gilberto and Rosicky you don't have much as backup. Denilson, Flamini and Diarra are the only guys I can think of, and while good players, they're not going to fill the gap left by one of the starters.
*

Of the midfielders, u stated two defensive mids in the back up; flamini and diarra ... Might i add, diaby (new viera) ... all in all, they have a good midfield .. and Arsene isn't a tactician with rigid formations, he is lenient and can change his formation based on what injuries he accumilates (let that be in midfield or elsewhere..).

Don't forget Diaby, and wev'e got Randall as well.
Thats...9 midfielders, wich means we have 4-5 back-ups, wich should be suffiecient.

Birmingham have failed in an attempt to bring Martin Jol to St Andrews as a replacement for former manager Steve Bruce.

The Blues are on the lookout for a new boss following Bruce's departure to Wigan and Birmingham admit they have been in contact with Jol.

However, Jol - who was sacked by Tottenham in October - is said to have turned Birmingham co-owner David Sullivan down because he feels he needs a break before returning to management.

"We did speak to Martin Jol over the weekend," Sullivan said in the Guardian.

Pedigree

"Martin thanked us for our interest but said it was too early for him to consider coming back into football such a short time after leaving Spurs.

"That is the type of coach we are looking at, someone with a pedigree that will excite the supporters."

Sullivan, though, remains confident Birmingham - who are also the subject of an ongoing takeover bid from Carson Yeung - will soon appoint a successor for Bruce.

"The usual suspects will be on everyone's lips but this could be a fresh start for Birmingham City," added Sullivan.

Respect

"We are looking at candidates at a certain level. It is a difficult one to try and get someone in who the dressing room will respect.

"Do you take a chance on an unproven coach at this level with a group of young players who will need guidance and will be looking for inspiration?

"Or do you go for a more experienced voice, someone respected in the world of football?"

Sky Sports

I'm disappointed they let Bruce talk to Wigan, it was great with them having an idiot manager. It's a good job a decent manager like Jol turned them down, he could do much better than a relegation battle team anyway.

Senderos has some very good qualities but he makes at least one big mistake in almost every single game he plays... that makes him a bad defender.

Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva claims he would welcome a January transfer to Juventus.

The Brazilian has struggled for first-team opportunities this season due to the form of Mathieu Flamini alongside Cesc Fabregas.

It has led to suggestions that Arsene Wenger could offload Gilberto in the New Year, particularly with the likes of Abou Diaby and Lassana Diarra also waiting in the wings.

And the 31-year-old concedes that, if Juventus open talks with the Premier League leaders, he would consider a move to Italy.

Prestigious

"Juve officials must know that I don't want to have a war with Arsenal," Gilberto told Gazzetta dello Sport.

"If they want me, they must talk with my club and get into serious negotiations.

"I feel disposed towards moving to Italy. I like Serie A, despite the recent events.

"Juventus are a prestigious club. They have overcome the problems that forced them to come back from Serie B."

Gilberto has also been linked with Internazionale, but the player is unaware of any interest from the Serie A champions.

He added: "Sincerely, I know nothing about Inter."

Doesn't surprise me. But it would mean the squads average age is even younger, it's getting ridiculous!

Actually, United now claim the top in that category.

Anyway... I hope Arsene has gotten wise enough not to let GS go... he will certainly need him in the championship race!

Newcastle 0-1 Liverpool. Gerrard with a 30 yarder.

Right before the half, Torres missed an open goal. laugh.gif

How could Torres miss that, even Gila would have put it in... rolleyes.gif

Great shot from Stevie!
kurtsimonw
Kuty made it 2-0 just after the break. I missed the goal, have only just noticed it says 0-2 in the corner!

Newcastle 0-3 Liverpool.
Great work from Gerrard and Babel, passing between them was superb, Babel got the fnish.

Newcastle need to buy some defenders, it's always the same old story with them. Conceeded 7 goals in their last two home games, ouch.

EDIT: Torres missed yet another easy chance, not having the best of days is El Nino.

EDIT 2: Torres through AGAIN, tries to take it round the keeper, and fails. What the hell's wrong with him!

Babel and Lucas Leiva were top. Same for Stevie, even playing on the right.

When you let 7 goals in as a keeper, you've had a shocking game, there's no getting away from that. Sunderlands defense is the best part of their team anyway, it's goals they struggle for.

ya i know but that doesnt make him a useless keeper. i'm sure should have saved a few of them but when you have a team as bad a sunderland in front of you it's not entirely ur fault.

I don't what happened today but when Besiktas conceded 8 to Liverpool, their keeper was not responsible for any of it. If there's no defence you can't blame the goalie and vice versa...

Their defense is generally good, alot of the goals they've conceeded this season have been more down to Gordon than their defense. In Gordon's defense, they didn't exactly help him out, he was still at fault for 2 or 3 of them though.

United aren't the team I thought they were. They rested Ronaldo and Vidic, Rooney is injured, and they lose to a team battling relegation. I think we know which players are most important to them!

Well done the Gunners!

Gallas' movement as a whole was very clever. (I think Arsenal look better when he's not playing though)

Don't you think the goalie messed it all up in the first goal? He was very good up until then but he fell down before even Gallas took the header... unsure.gif

In any case, Arsenal extended their lead today and that puts a smile on my face! smile.gif

I think the keeper was worried Gallas would pass it on to Adebayor, and by the time he decided to block the header it was too late.

Lucas top? I thought he was terrible. Gave the ball away a few times and other than that didn't do anything. Even the push of the ball for the free kick for gerrard was abit heavy. But it didn't matter for stevie, brilliant goal. What position does he play? At the moment for me he's way overhyped. Mind you I've only seen compilations and couple of games for the reds of him.

Torres deserved a goal, just couldn't finish. He's going to be a super player. That turn of speed is awesome.

I wasn't too impressed with him either.

If his finishing matched the rest of his game, he could be on of the best in the World. To be fair to him, he's adjusted to the EPL very well and very quickly.

-Arsenal are the class of the league.
-The usual top 4, City won't last with them in the long run.
-UEFA Cup teams are looking like any from Blackburn, Man City, Villa, Everton and Portsmouth
-Newcastle, as always, and Spurs are the big underacheivers.
-Reading, Fulham and West ham are in for the boring season, no relegation battle - no European battle.
-Derby are just useless, they may as well go back to the Championship now. Blues, Wigan and Boro are all looking bad, relegation is likely.
Rossoneri7
@Kurt ... I believe City will end the season at 4th place smile.gif

Hopefully, they'll do it and we can see them in the CL next season biggrin.gif

If City keep their home form up, they could do very well. Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea still have to go there though, it'sll be tough for them. They should make the UEFA Cup at least though.

They are a very interesting side, Jack ... They get -zero hype- and are a very tactical side, in comparison to other midtable teams in the EPL ...

I think they'll come good .. What I'd like to see is a 4th place finish from them .. But realistically speaking, they might not make it .. Still, it would be interesting to see how they handle it

Cesc Fabregas insists he is keen to see out the rest of his career with Arsenal.

The Spanish midfielder has consistently been linked with an eventual return to his home country, with Real Madrid and Barcelona thought to be admirers.

However, Fabregas - who quit Barca at the age of 16 as he went in search of first-team football at Arsenal - is adamant he is now happier than ever with The Gunners.

Fabregas, now 20, has starred in Arsenal's unbeaten start to the season and he admits he has now ditched plans to return to Spain.

Truth

"When I first came to England my idea was to go back to Spain one day," Fabregas said in The Sun.

"But the truth is that now I'm happier every day and I love London, the people and the club.

"I'm going to say the truth - every day I have more desire to stay here for a long time, for the rest of my career.

"I haven't had the fortune of playing in the Spanish league and right now I really identify with football in the Premier League because it's so passionate, fast, attacking and vibrant. It's the football that I like the most."

Sky Sports

It will be great to see him in the EPL in let's say.. 5 years or so, he could be the best in the World.

He came off with an injury in the 2nd half against Sevilla, he could miss Arsenals game at the weekend.
Rossoneri7
Maybe as good as Xavi, but I doubt he'll reach the hight of Seedorf or Pirlo, my opinion anyways
Jack Sparrow
He's got a cool head. He could be one of the best mid-fielders in modern football. But again, we can't judge him based on one or two good seasons.

Neither can we compare him to Seedorf and Pirlo, since all three are mid-fielders, but different kind of players. I'd put Fabregas in between, the defensive playmaking of Pirlo and the advanced trequartista role of Clarence. He's a bit of a compromise.
kurtsimonw
Result from tonight..

Blackburn 0-4 Villa
29' [0 - 1] J. Carew
53' R. Nelsen (Red card)
53' [0 - 2] G. Barry (pen.)
81' [0 - 3] A. Young
89' [0 - 4] M. Harewood

A very good win, I'm not going to get carried away though.

He's much more talented IMO. Watching him play is always an excitement. He just has that special something Xavi or Xabi Alonso are missing.

I'd guess Fabregas's future is too tied in with Wenger's.

I haven't seen anything magical per se, to make me go Wowwww...like Andy P, but what I have seen is a high level of skill, matched with almost dogged ruthless industriousness. A Kaka, R10 or even a Clarence will produce more skill, but they can't bring in the same amount of determination every single game. Rino is more industrious than Cesc, but then like he says so himself, he doesn't have the skills.

That's what sets him apart. Very few players come with both.
kurtsimonw
I'd say Jack is pretty much spot on with that assesment.
