That argument would have made sense had they not played like THAT in the Euros, making teams as great as Germany look helpless and ordinary. I think they've found unity/enthusiasm/spirit/whateveryoucallit.

EDIT: I hope by the Italy>Spain thing you mean your favorite is still Italy, cause you can't even compare these two teams at the moment. Spain are FAR better.

Lol, Germany is not great !

I said Spain has great individuals but they dont have the glue for that team and they will FAIL!

Italy is my favorite and they also have great XI line up (IMO I should be this):

Buffon
Zambrotta - Canavaro - Chiellini - Crisito
De Rossi - Palombo - Marchisio
Pirlo
Borriello - Di Natale/Quagliarella

P.S. I'm still waiting for Spains midfield?
Is it going to be : Silva-Xavi-Fabregas-Iniesta ?

EDIT: Did u saw the game Italy - Spain for Euro 2008 ?

I can't help but think I'm looking at the squad of soon to be world cup winners when I see Spain's call-ups. they're stupidly good (© Danny).

world class goalkeeper
world class defense
world class midfield
world class attack

If they don't win it, they will be the biggest underachievers EVER.

You know it's not that simple... the differences at this level are not too big when we say "one is better than the other"... any one of the big teams can win it and it would not be a surprise.

I haven't followed Spain through the qualifiers so I don't know what system Del Bosque opts for. That midfield you posted needs an incontrista and Busquets could do that, although I don't really like him. Aragones used to play Senna and Xavi, which gave proper balance to the squad.

That's what I'm trying to say. These players can't create a balanced squad.

I don't think Fabregas will start. Someone like Busquets will, in that 4th mid position.

I liked the series of ones with the two little boys picking fantasy teams from 2006. That one was clever.

This one isn't bad (Rooney in the trailer with the beard? priceless).

I think it's great, it was just a bit of sarcasm at dst since he always makes fun of Nike.

The Rooney and Ronaldinho bits are great.

Ronal....doh!

So there were some friendlies yesterday for teams going to the world cup. Some of the results were a little interesting.

Argentina 5-0 Canada
Portugal 0-0 Cape Verde (oops)
England 3-1 Mexico
Germany 4-0 Sud Tirol (and they lost another player, Trasch, due to injury)
South Africa 1-1 Bulgaria

As regards Italy, Iaquinta and Chiellini have both had minor knocks (Iaquinta's resumed training with the group, Chiellini has not). Rossi's still training separately because he hasn't done the athletic and aerobic tests the rest of the group has done yet.

Fifa.com : Slovenia's future star

QUOTE
Mourinho's Slovenian starlet
When a top-level coach describes one of his emerging prospects as having "everything a young player should have", it is generally worth taking note. When that man is Jose Mourinho, the words take on added significance.

Inter Milan’s Portuguese coach is not renowned for lavishing praise on youngsters but, in Rene Krhin, he sees something out of the ordinary. Nor is he alone in this. Indeed, the Slovenian teenager was the subject of a titanic tug-of-war before agreeing a new contract with the Italian champions at the turn of the year, with Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea all reportedly willing to pay £7m to prise him from the San Siro.

Krhin’s power, athleticism and technical ability have also caught the eye of his international coach. Matjaz Kek has been anxious to carefully nurture the Inter prodigy, but nonetheless recognises that his country’s best prospect cannot be kept under wraps for long. Kek chose Wembley as the stage on which to hand Krhin his Slovenia debut last September and, having provided an impressive cameo, the 19-year-old duly went on to make his senior bow for I Nerazzurri the following week.

"That was a very special week for me," he later reflected. "You work a whole lifetime for certain experiences and it was a dream come true." This, it was becoming clear, was to be Krhin’s breakthrough season, with his competitive international debut against San Marino a month later further establishing him within the Slovenian squad.

He is really professional with big ambitions, and I'm also very happy with his discipline and talent. Jose Mourinho on Rene Krhin
Like everyone in the Balkan nation, Kek had been carefully monitoring the midfielder’s development ever since Inter plucked him from his hometown club Maribor at the tender age of 16. Injuries had disrupted Krhin’s early progress in Milan, but by the summer of 2009 Mourinho had seen enough to select the 6ft 3ins youngster for the first team’s pre-season tour of the USA.

His initial impressions having been confirmed Stateside, the former Chelsea manager assured his young protégé that competitive outings would not be long in coming. And he proved true to his word, as Krhin recalled: "What did Mourinho say to me before I came on [for my debut]? He motivated me and told me again that I have his complete faith.

"He's a fantastic person, he loves the youngsters and he knows how to work and talk with them. He makes you feel part of the group. I like him a lot."

Fortunately for Krhin, the esteem in which he holds his charismatic coach is mutual. "In Rene Krhin I see what I expect from a 19-year old," said Mourinho. "He is really professional with big ambitions, and I'm also very happy with his discipline and talent. I wish him all the best in his career and I will say this once again: Rene has everything that a young player should have."

As with any promising youngster, comparisons to current stars are almost inevitable, and Krhin’s dynamic box-to-box running has seen him likened to another former pupil of Mourinho’s in Frank Lampard. In truth, however, the Slovenian’s range of attributes – pace, power, passing ability and aggression – ensure that he can play a variety of midfield roles, with his Inter coach thought to envisage his long-term future in a more defensive position to the one Lampard has made his own.

Mourinho and Inter were certainly steadfast in resisting interest from England, and offers of co-ownership within Italy, to tie Krhin down to a new four-year deal, although Napoli and Palermo remain keen on taking him on loan next season. His future may well depend on whether Mourinho stays or goes, although he could go a long way towards shaping his own destiny with a starring role at South Africa 2010.

As thing stand, Krhin seems almost certain to begin the tournament on the bench as Kek remains faithful to the players who secured qualification against all the odds. However, the 19-year-old is steadily beginning to make his presence felt at international level and, should he be given the opportunity, don’t bet against him justifying all the hype.

USA lead the Czech's 1-0, Edu.

Cech showing yet again that he's average at best.
kurtsimonw
1-1 Onyewu beaten at the back post with a header. Pretty awful defending, he barely got off the ground.
kurtsimonw
2-1 to CZE. And just like that, America hates football again.
Fishdoll
Actually, I'm goign to give a fins up to ESPN -- not so much for the game tonight but for the fact that in the US they're showing all the games live (on one of the espn stations or a few on ABC) and then will replay the day's games in the evening, US time, on ESPN Classic.

And Hercules Gomez equalizes for the US.
kurtsimonw
Never heard of that guy before, who's he play for?
Fishdoll
Erm. I think he's our oriundi. Plays for...Club America, perhaps? One of the big Mexico City clubs.
kurtsimonw
Ah, that's probably why I've never heard of him them.

CZE retake the lead, nice finish after a bit of scrappy play in the box.
Warchant
gomez plays in mexico and has been tearing it up.

usa's defense has looked very suspect tonight. i have a feeling that the final squad will do much better though. i've liked what i've seen in attack though...especially since most of our good players didn't dress up.
Fishdoll
Nice goal by Necid just now. The US got caught on the counter.
kurtsimonw
It's not like having Dunney and co. in front of you is it, Guzan? biggrin.gif

It does seem the biggest problem for the US though, the defense's concentration is poor and they seem to try to hard. They throw themselves in at unnecessary times and get caught out a bit. Not sure how full strength the US team was (looked about 50/50 to me, but I don't see all their games), but the defense is certainly the priority to work on.

Few names I'm not familiar with. The first thing that screams out at me is the strikers, I always thought the US had more quality than that. Maybe I'm still stuck in the past with names like Twellman, McBride and Johnson.

Also, Beasley as a defender, really? I'm sure Danny will correct me if I'm wrong, but I always thought he was a winger/forward.

LOL, even I'm stuck in the past...I certainly thought those were weak strikers too. This guy Buddle has been tearing it up in MLS, but that doesn't mean much.

Beasley usually plays left midfield in the games I remember seeing him in.
Warchant
US's striking core has been lacking the past few years.

eddie johnson and twelman have never quite made it to the world cup level.

davies is just now getting back from the horrible car wreck.

i think gomez is going to surprise some people...if he gets to play.

our midfield is stacked though...that's partially why beasley is playing defense now. he played during the conf. cup and made a huge blunder that gave brazil their first goal.
servbot
Can't Beasley play forward? Or has he lost some of that blazing speed?
Warchant
he's not near as quick as he used to be. i'd much rather have donovan and dempsey taking care of that part of the game.
CHU-LIP
Beasley plays defense nowadays? ohmy.gif

I know him from PSV a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time ago, a left winger back then. smile.gif

He is/was.

He's been playing LB for his country for quite a while, which is a bit ironic as one reason it didn't work out for him in Scotland was the rugged nature of the game here. Quite why a tiny weak guy like him is being used as LB for his country is beyond me. I don't buy the reason Warchant gives, because surely they have a better LB somewhere than Beasley.

He's lost about 800 yards of pace and skill - which is surprising as he's only just turned 28. I could understand that into his 30s, but tbh, he seemed slow from the get go when we signed him - certainly not the trailblazer he was in his PSV days.

Maradona's naked ambition

Diego Maradona says he will strip off if Argentina win the World Cup

It could see his infamous Hand of God replaced with the Gut of God.

Argentina haven't won the World Cup since Maradona inspired them to a 3-2 victory over West Germany 24 years ago.

But the controversial coach believes he can deliver a third triumph at football's showpiece event to follow their wins in 1986 and 1978.

"If we win the Cup then I will run naked to the Obelisk in Buenos Aires," he said after watching his side defeat Canada in a friendly.

Maradona has something of a history when it comes to public nudity, after posing without his clothes for El Grafico magazine.

Meanwhile Maradona said he kept star player Lionel Messi on the bench against Canada in case he got injured.

"If something had happened to you in that match, I'd have been shot - you know where," Maradona told the press.

Argentina face Nigeria, Korea Republic and Greece in Group B in South Africa.

Sky is reporting that Michael Essien is out of the World Cup. Bad news for Ghana.
Dracoris
Sorry I missed this thread.....but just to note it was basically US's second string playing with a good bit of the third string on tuesday. I'm not saying you should expect better, but lets see how we do on Saturday v. Turkey before we start knocking on our team!

I too also like Gomez, he could be the second striker to Altidore, whom I really like. But my preference was Davies and I am realllllly sad to see him not play.

Without Davies I like this lineup though I doubt it will get played (also assuming Gooch finds some form in the friendlies):

Altidore
Donovan Dempsey
Feilhaber Bradley Torres
Cherundolo Gooch Boca Spector
Howard

-Bradley usually likes two fowards so we won't see this, but I think this formation gets the best out of what we have. Edu would be a welcome sub, and might be preferred against England to help lock down Rooney.

-Cherundolo is more of a right back, but anything is better than Bornstein.

Ah crap your right he does!

And yea, we'll need 2 DMs in for the rooney factor. Or pay someone to break his leg pregame.....
