Samba duo’s Milan swansong
Friday 16 May, 2008

Brazilians Marcos Cafu and Serginho have said farewell to Milan ahead of the final game of the season against Udinese.

Cafu arrived at the Rossoneri from Roma in 2003 and the 37-year-old has made over 100 appearances during a highly successful period at San Siro.

“Five years ago I chose to come to Milan because I knew that they were a big club where I could show everything that I had learned in my career,” he explained.

“I have had five marvellous years in which I’ve managed to win everything.

“One incredible memory will always be with me – when I arrived in the summer of 2003, Milan had just won the Champions League Final in Manchester.

“And technically we are still European champions now, for a short while longer.

“The joy of winning these titles will always remain within me, as well as my teammates.

“It’s the right time to leave now, which is sad but I knew that sooner or later the time would come to go home, back to Brazil and my family.

“My children have got on well here in Italy, especially here in Milan.”

Cafu hasn’t yet decided whether he will continue playing in his homeland or hang up his boots.

“I don’t know if I’ll play on in Brazil,” he said. “All I know is that my last game for Milan is on Sunday and I don’t know whether I’ll get to play or not.

“I am ready to take on such an important task. Carlo Ancelotti will be able to count on me on all fronts.

“It’s not easy to say goodbye to the fans who have welcomed me in a fantastic manner, I hope I haven’t let anyone down. I will continue, however, to support Milan’.”

It will also be an emotional day for Cafu’s compatriot Serginho, who joined the club in 1999 and is also heading for the exit.

“After my back problems, I haven’t been able to get back to peak fitness, which is why I think the time is right to leave,” the 36-year-old said.

“I came to Milan in the summer of 1999 along with Gennaro Gattuso and Andriy Shevchenko when I was 27 and I have spent nine splendid years for which I thank the club and the fans.

“I have managed to find a piece of Brazil in Italy and it has been stupendous.

“Having come here to complete a mission, today I can calmly accept that my career is over.

“Sunday evening will be difficult because San Siro has become my home, but I am happy with everything I have done for this club.”

Thanks for all the great memories. And also for stepping down now when its crucial milan rejuvenate the side. Hope they can get some playing time on the weekend.

(My translations. Apologies in advance for any errors)

Here's what Cafu said:

'Five years ago, I chose to come to Milan because I knew that it was a serious club, important, and that I could have the chance to demonstrate everything that I'd learned in my footballing past. I've had five marvelous years in which we won everything. It'll remain an incredible memory for me. When I arrived in the summer of 2003, Milan had just won the CL at Manchester and today Milan is still for a few days CL champions, after the final in Athens. With Milan we've won so many titles including World Champions and Italian champions. I think that what'll remain with me forever is the joy for all the titles I've won with my teammates. The time has come to leave, it's sad and difficult, but I knew that sooner or later the time would arrive to return home, to return to Brazil to my family. My children have enjoyed Italy, especially Milan.

When I arrived in Milan, I found Coach Carlo Ancelotti who has also known the Roma atmosphere. From the first game in rome, there was the curiosity of seeing the reactions in our comparisons of the Roma fans. At Roma, I had six wonderful years, won the Scudetto and what will remain with me from the Roma fans as well as the Milan fans, is certainly a wonderful memory.

The time for salutes is here. I don't know if I'll play in Brazil. Sunday will be my last game, I don't know if the coach will play me or not, but I'll be ready for this important game, which will not only be my farewell game but an important game for Milan. Carlo Ancelotti can count on me. It won't be easy to salute the fans who've supported me in such a fantastic manner, I hope I haven't disappointed anyone. I will continue to support Milan.

In my career, I've won 32 titles, it's certainly very satisfying from a personal point of view as well as a professional point of view. This shows that my career has been a victorious one, I've won everything and can only be happy about that."

Here's what Serginho said:

"After the problems with my back that have lasted two years, I haven't been able to regain optimal form, and because of this I tihnk it's the right time to leave. I arrived in Milan in the summer of 1999 along with Gattuso and Shevchenko, I was 27 and I've spent 9 wonderful years here. I must thank the club and the fans for the fantastic way in which I have been welcome here. At Milan I was also able to find a bit of Brazil in Italy and that was wonderful.

In the last two years, I've suffered because my back prevented me from maintaining my fitness. I've tried everything without success. Today I'm 36, in the past I didn't have any problems, but I've decided to accept this one and to return home.

I'd like to thank Milan for what it's done in these 9 years, I've always done the most and dedicated myself to this jersey. Also Silvio Berlusconi has shown his esteem and this is immensely satisfying because it's not easy to please such a demanding person.

I came to Milan with the goal of completing a mission, and today that mission is complete and with much calmness I accept that my career is finished. Sunday will be a difficult moment for me because San Siro is my home and all the fans have always supported the group. Farewells are always difficult, but I am calm about what I've done and what I've created for this team. I leave calmly knowing that I've given 100% of my ability and today because I can no longer give 100%, the most intelligent decision is to leave."

Heaps thanks, Tennie. sad.gif These guys gave the club everything, and in return the club did the same. Plus, they never created trouble in the locker room. A salute is without doubt in order, then.

So long and thank you.

Cafu has written an open letter to Rossoneri fans. (Original here; translation is mine and apologies in advance for any errors)

Dear Rossoneri fans,

Sunday's will be my last game in the Milan jersey. It's been five years since I've come to be part of the great rossoneri family and 11 since my arrival in Italy.

They've been unforgettable years, rich in indescribable emotions for me and my family and years of great professional satisfaction that, as happens in sport as in life, sometimes alternate with less happy feelings. I coudl choose a long series of mements that will forever remain in my memories: from the first success with San Paolo and Palmeiras, to the extraordinary winning of the scudetto with Roma, to the moment in which, as captain of the Selecao, I lifted the World Cup in Japan in 2002, up to the victories in Milan colors of the scudetto in 2004 and the Champions League last year.

I can't forget less happy experiences, which to me are equally strong, such as the unspeakable night in Istanbul.

All of these are goals in which I arrived at running to the end, with a smile on my lips and with a good dose of humility, hard work and sacrifice. It's these final characteristics that represent not only me, but the entire group that I've had the privilege to work with in these five years. A team composed of great campions on and off the pitch, with whom I've quickly established a splendid rapport, enough to share with some of them their beautiful memories.

I'd like to thank, in my name and the name of my family, the president, coach, my teammates, and the club directors, all of whom I wish the best, and all the friends I've had the fortune to meet during my "Italian" years, and especially the many fans of Milan and Roma who hve always supported and encouraged me.

Marcos Cafu

I read somewhere that Cafu's son will join the Primavera squad (or Berretti(?)) while Sergio will start scouting for us in Brazil and act as a liason there

^^ Galliani said that in an interview yesterday.

Cafu Jr., Davide Ancelotti, Daniel and Christian Maldini.. laugh.gif The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Does Van Basten have a son? I say sign him as soon as he's born. I'm not letting any freakin Russian oligarch beat us to him.
Fillipo Simone
^^ George Weah Jr. was also with us but it seems like he has dissapeared...

What position is Cafu's son playing anyway?

Thanks for everything Cafu and Serginho! smile.gif
