Mourinho hails Euro InterTuesday 16 September, 2008
Jose Mourinho praised Adriano and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but above all Inter's work-rate in Greece.
“The three points were the best part, but I think we played a Champions League style game, especially away from home. It isn't easy and the team had the right character to play for the win,” he said after the 2-0 victory at Panathinaikos.
“The statistics say getting points away from home is key and we always come out to win. There were some difficult moments in the second half, but I think the win was deserved.”
Ibrahimovic set up both goals for Amantino Mancini and substitute Adriano.
“I congratulated Ibra because he worked so hard for the team and a player like him doesn't need to score in order to be decisive. His pass for Adriano was genius.
“I told Adriano to play between the full-back and central defender and that's precisely what he did! It was great movement.”
Mourinho had complained that Roberto Mancini accustomed the side to playing defensively and he was working to transform their overall approach.
“It isn't simple to change the mentality of a team, but today we got the message across.
“The last two seasons Inter had lost the opening game of the Champions League, but I told them we were a better side than Panathinaikos and if we didn't come here at least playing to win, then we had absolutely no place in this competition.
“By introducing Adriano instead of a defender, that also got the message to them. I like attacking teams who always try to win, even away from home, and play with enthusiasm.”
Above all, Mourinho admired the work-rate of his Nerazzurri stars in Athens.
“You cannot ask strikers to defend by running constantly backwards. I ask them that, if they lose the ball, within the next five or six seconds they need to press the opponents to try and get it back. That is do-able and it makes it trickier for counter-attacks.
“I told the side that if Panathinaikos have the chance to go on the counter, that creates problems for Materazzi and Cordoba. They understood that and I am truly happy with the work rate of my squad.”
Roma got off to a dismal start, losing 2-1 at home to Cluj, but Inter are already top of their group after Werder Bremen stalled 0-0 with Anorthosis.
“I didn't expect it, but Roma are better than Cluj, can win in Romania and I'll keep cheering them on so all four Italian teams can go far.”
Channel4 I'm beginning to think this could finally be Inter's year. the only thing they lacked last season was that winning mentality which now thanks to a number of factor, like Calciopoli and Mourinho, it looks to be no more an issue for them... we'll see.
