Cole used to be good, but these last 3 years have been awful.

If Cuellar leaves at such a low fee I imagine Randy Lerner will be shot on sight at Villa Park.

Ability doesn't just dry up. I say he could do you a real turn.

Well his agent has confirmed the clubs have agreed a fee. My personal conviction is that unless he's desperate to get away from Villa and really, really, REALLY wants to rejoin Rangers, the wages he's on at Villa Park will prove too much of a hurdle.

He basically has to take a 50% cut. But his words were that of someone who really wanted to come back so who knows.
dst
I had not read about the fee... did Arsenal really sell Clichy for 7m? huh.gif Seriously, how can their managers be co useless and still have a job? They were selling to Manchester for f*** sake how is it possible to not even get 10m from Manchester?

...
kurtsimonw
Because Clichy is worth about half of that?
dst
yeah right...

it would not matter anyway, as this is Manchester, they should have been able to reach 10 at least even if that was true.
kurtsimonw
Clichy is a liability, it's why they've sold him there, it's why they sold Adebayor there. A reason Cesc and Nasri won't end up playing for them, they can actually play.

SSN saying Villa have bid £7m for Scott Parker. Would be a terrible signing, far worse than what we have. Need to be spending our money elsewhere.

I agree but this has nothing to do with what I'm saying... all I'm saying is that 7m when you're dealing with Manchester is too little, regardless of the player's quality. If Adebayor was sold for more than 20m and he's in the same class with Clichy then that just shows this one was a terrible deal.

Strikers will always cost more, it's the way transfers have always been. Both went to City for twice what they're worth, in my opinion. Adebayor isn't quite as bad at his job as Clichy either. He's a striker that can score goals, even if he doesn't play well. Clichy is a defender that can't defend.

laugh.gif laugh.gif Well we all know my feelings on that show pony. The 'future of the England team' I was told over a decade ago... The only thing he's ever been good at was getting in Soccer AM's showboat section.

Parker for that fee wouldn't be that bad, but surely you need wingers now, not central mids.

£7m for an ageing CM who would/should be our 3rd/4th choice when we have other needs would be a massive mistake. I'd rather take Der Hammer back on a free and spend the money on players we actually need.

I think he's somewhat better, but I know your opinion on him so I won't dwell on that. It would be like you trying to prove to me Joe Cole is still world-class.

Think of it this way, at least you can't waste money on Charlie Adam now laugh.gif

Corinthians to bid £40m for Tevez apparently. I really hope City accept it. I want Tevez to F off to South America where I won't have to hear his name again. The man sums up everything that is wrong in football, I hate him as much as the worst small heath players.

Hopefully if City refuse he just retires.

Aston Villa will be relegated if they sell Stewart Downing - Mark Walters
Villans legend warns his former club that if they sell the England midfielder, they could be embroiled in a battle against relegation, given that Ashley Young has already left

Villa have rejected a bid of £15 (€17) million from Liverpool for the England international, but are expected to accept if the Reds raise their offer closer to £20 (€22.5) million.

However, Walters believes that new Villa manager Alex McLeish should think of building a team rather than the money he will receive from the sale of Downing.

He told The Daily Star Sunday: “Every player has their price and £20m is a great price for Stewart Downing.

“But considering Villa have no-one to replace him, it would leave them a big problem in terms of who is left to create the chances.

“They have great youngsters in the youth and reserves teams but they are up and coming and not the calibre of Stewart Downing.

“If Villa want to do anything this season they must at least replace him first before they even consider selling him.

“To say that selling Downing would leave them weak would be a massive understatement. It would be suicidal.

“Selling him just after Ashley Young would mean Villa should expect another relegation fight as we don’t have the type of players to replace them.”

Walters began his career at Villa Park and spent six seasons there before moving to Rangers, and he has become disillusioned with their policy of selling their best players.

He said: “When I joined Villa in 1981 they were going round signing some of the best players around – but that changed while I was there.

“They have now sold their best player in each of the last three seasons with Gareth Barry, James Milner and Ashley Young all going.

“If I was Darren Bent I would be very concerned. When he arrived, he was supposed to be the missing link.

“But now Bent is here they are losing the players who created most of his goal chances.

“The talk is that Charles N’Zogbia will be brought in but, if I was him, I wouldn’t go to Villa.

“Why would an ambitious player want to go to a club that is not in Europe and selling its best players?”

Just for you, kurt smile.gif

He's a CF but has played on the wing from time-to-time.

As for Walters comments, one thing I agree with is that Bent must be pissed. He made a big more to a club where he had players to create things for him and it worked well, now those players have gone. But then teams who sell their best players don't always get relegated. Arsenal have been doing the same now for a while. To be honest, we've been doing the same for a long time, but fortunately we just sign young, coach well, and sell on for a big profit. To think we signed Barry, Milner, Downing and Young for a total £30m and got in around £80m in mad really.

One thing I can't agree with is him saying players won't want to be here. I feel the opposite. Why have Wigan and Portsmouth been able to sign players above their level recently? Because they're happy to be a stepping stone. They sign young, hungry players and basically tell them they won't stop them when they want to leave to a bigger club and it makes them appealing. Players know they can go it, make a name for themself and move on and the club won't kick up a fuss when they leave.

If we bring in Zog for less money than we sold Downing for, good business overall.

So I found myself entering a fantasy football league. I wasn't sure who I wanted as strikers. So, I have put my faith in your manlove of Bent, Kurt, and chose him. I wouldn't have considered him without your passionate defence of his abilities.

So if he ruins my fantasy team, I blame you completely.

In other news, Cuellar has been linked with Espanyol in the last day or two. Apparently the contract Houllier offered him was withdrawn by Eck, hence he's pretty much free to leave which is why our bid has been confirmed as accepted.

It's all down to the player - where he wants to go. And, in the case of Rangers, whether he'll take a pay cut.

Best guess he sees an injured player and just doesn't fancy him. And sees a chance to help out his old club and 'boyhood heroes' so accepts our bid for the guy.

I do remember how incredibly stubborn he was at Ibrox - he wouldn't change things when they weren't working, so I guess this is that mule headedness kicking in again. I remember very specifically he persisted with Ronald Wattereus in goal over the infinitely superior Stefan Klos despite all the errors he was making. Yeah, we did win the league in the end, but it was his ability to be obtuse it was in spite of, not because of.

Like I say though, his first season or two in all his new jobs have always been good. It's after that the rails come off. And then you'll be embarrassed by his hideous media performances, then will hate him when he abandons Villa for another cushy job.

We had that here with MON too. Sorensen was our best keeper, but he kept playing Carson. Luke Young was the best right back, but he refused to play him because he didn't want to drop any of Cuellar/Dunne/Collins.

So long as he at least tries to play decent football and doesn't just sign big long ball players!

Truth is he's never consistently had a good team of footballers - he was at Ibrox at a time when our finances were starting to get bad. The one time he did have money (using the Boumsong cash) he brought in decent players who ultimately won the league for us.

But he's lost Young, Downing and now possibly Cuellar. But with a few quid he might actually have you playing football. For a while. Till it all goes horrible.

I think it came about because we'd spent about £25m on defenders and then we go and spend another £8m on another. Him being a former Celtic boss and Cuellar being Rangers best player just got people thinking I suppose.

I can see the thinking behind it, but former Rangers bosses, Graeme Souness in particular, bought Ferguson for Blackburn for £8M, and Boumsong for Newcastle for the same amount. In both cases, our best player.

I doubt MON was trying to screw Rangers over - football managers don't have time to waste £10M or whatever on petty games like that.

I just worry about his lack of command. He's a great shot-stopper, no doubt, but he aint no Bozzie!

I have to say I'm happy with the links to replace Downing and Young. We've had a bid rejected for N'Zogbia and apparently the difference between the 2 teams is £1m. Sky Sports reckons we're in for Fiorentina's Vargas which I'd be very happy with also.

Alex McLeish was ignored by Aston Villa's travelling fans as Darren Bent marked the Scot's first game in charge by setting up a 3-1 win at Walsall.

McLeish's first appearance in front of the Villa supporters before the Asia Cup next week in Hong Kong was seen as an acid test, and the unhappy fans refused to applaud the former Birmingham manager.

QUOTE
Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish was delighted with the fans reaction to him as he saw his new side began pre-season with a 3-1 win at Walsall.

The game at the Banks's Stadium was the first game in charge of Villa for the former Birmingham City chief.

And he opened up with a 3-1 win as Darren Bent scored twice.

The England striker turned in a pass from Emile Heskey for Villa's first and netted a second from close range after Richard Dunne headed on a corner, before

Heskey made it 3-0 when Bent hit the post and the rebound fell his way.

Villa were cruising at half-time but could not add any further goals and the final scorer was the home side's George Bowerman.

McLeish, who made the controversial switch from Birmingham last month, gave a debut to goalkeeper Shay Given after his arrival from Manchester City.

But McLeish was delighted with his own welcome, telling Sky Sports News: "I'm sure it was at the back of my mind.

"But you've got to confront it and face whatever comes your way.

"I've had to do a wee bit of that over the last few weeks so it was a nice reception, it was terrific."

Balotelli hauled off for showboating during last night's City Galaxy friendly. The commentators were hilarious throughout - talk about opinionated. They were close to vomiting with outrage at some things at times, and were screaming at the medical staff to take Clichy off after his head knock.

They weren't too impressed with Mario for his little circle slide in front of goal. Indeed, they remained obsessed with portraying him as Satan for the rest of the match.

It's only a friendly ffs.

ROBERTO Mancini will purchase every member of Arsenal's squad, with the obvious exception of Eboue, just to see the look on Arsene Wenger's face.

After his signing of Clichy and the bid for Nasri enraged the self-proclaimed 'Professor Of Third Place', Mancini will continue buying the rest of their former teammates every couple of days until Wenger performs an as-yet-unnamed forfeit.

Mancini said: "By the time we get to Bendtner, it's going to be obvious we're just taking the piss, but to be honest that's just going to make it even better when we follow it up with a £21m bid for Almunia.

"It's going to be difficult to keep a straight face when Almunia holds up a City shirt up, especially as he will drop it several times - but it'll be totally worth it."

Mancini has also asked City's billionaire owners to buy Arsenal's Emirates Stadium and rename it the 'Arsene Stinks Of Piss Stadium' as the cherry on the top of his elaborate prank.

Footballologist Wayne Hayes said: "To draw a Panini football sticker analogy, Wenger is the kid who carefully buys a packet every now and then and makes the most of the players inside whereas Mancini is the flash kid whose dad just buys him a whole box of them to keep him quiet.

"The current disagreement between them is the equivalent of Mancini getting Wenger in a headlock behind the PE block and demanding he hand over the few cards still in his 'need' pile."

Despite Mancini's prank injecting hundreds of millions of pounds into Arsenal to rebuild the squad, the money will be useless as the Italian plans to follow Wenger to every transfer negotiation and offer an extra 50p on top of whatever Wenger bids.
