According to wiki he's only played once for Italy, is that right? Seems strange he's had so few chance considering how well he's performed this season.

It's the problem with the media nowadays. People try and praise players as the next big thing as early as they can so they can be the "first" to stop a great talent.

One thing's for sure: Italy are never gonna run low on quality goalkeepers.
Fillipo Simone
Mar 29 2014, 05:10 PM
I hope not. But Buffon is the only true quality in recent years. Marchetti, Abbiati, Sirigu or De Sanctis never come close and ain't getting younger as well. I'm getting a bit worried. Take a look at Germany, they have a handful of great or very good keepers.

I still think Italy have a very healthy crop of talented keepers coming through
What's worrying is the situation in defence. Where before we had guys like Paolo, Baresi, Nesta, Canna, and on and on. Nowadays, our saving graces are Elbow to the face Chiellini and Bone Head Bonucci...
I mean if we're going to turn on alert buttons it has to be for this area
Fillipo Simone
Mar 29 2014, 07:45 PM
Yeah, and they're not young: Chiellini is 29, Barzagli 32. Not many young talented defenders to see ahead.
But I'd say it's a complete deterioration. Italy once had 6 or 7 top strikers, a few great or decent trequartistas and a bunch of brilliant defenders and keepers. Who's now in their league? I'd say 6-7 maximum players.

Agreed. I don't think it's a coincidence either that the league declined along with the introduction of new home-grown talent
Yes there's the general financial mess of Country, League and Clubs, but the shortage in producing talent is also a huge contributing factor.
Look at Germany, their league has improved so much along with the huge boom in talent that they are rapidly producing

Plus them losing now, will kill the possibility of them taking their unbeaten streak going from what they had this season to the next
And seriously, I really hope next season there will be someone good enough to challenge them for that title because it's getting seriously tedious

I was under the impression that we had the longest unbeaten streak in Europe?

Domestic Europe that is, and second in the world behind some Brazilian or Argentinean club. Bayen are within touching distance though, and while their performance seem have dipped after winning the league, they do have Dortmund up soon.

Don't know about that, but these records mostly hold prestige in the domestic sense. Just like with Arsenal and their invincibles

I'm sure a club somewhere in a lesser league must have gone on a big run before. Rangers are 33 games unbeaten as we speak, win every game and will still be playing in an easy Scottish league next season.
acid911
Apr 1 2014, 01:13 AM
Big run yes, but 58 games unbeaten, I am not sure.

Anyway, if our record is there, then I'd prefer it to stand. We have too little of a European prestige these days, as it is, and this is Maldini we are talking about, playing in the tough conditions of the 90s. We shall see.

Don't know if anyone mentioned this or saw it but Inter drew last night. Which means we're 7 points away from them right now with a derby still to be played.
I think if we manage to get some sort of run going we can catch them in that last EL spot, even though I'm not all that enthusiastic about being in it and wasting our resources on it, I also understand why people at the club and even some fans want to see us at least make it into the EL

It would be some sort of saving a poor season to finish in Europe. Plus finishing above Inter of course. And give us some hope to beginning the next. I'm worried about the next match, because it is a must win.
As someone on the forum said, we need to win at least 7 of our next 9 games to have a realistic shot at the EL places.

I don't even think we have 9 games left in the season though...
I think 7 points is doable in the time we have considering how Inter are doing. They drew against Livorno after having a 2 goal lead, and aside from the derby we have a fairly relaxed run-in

Regardless of our opinions on the EL, it is a must for Milan to make it.
The EL represents a lot from a financial perspective. True that games in EL make pennies in comparison to the CL. Yet sponsorship, tv and player image rights also contribute. Making Europe helps the clubs income, again regardless of our respective opinions on the matter.
Not making Europe will cause more sorrows for us, even IF hypothetically speaking 'no Europe would mean we are 100% commited to the local league'.

which in turn will make it harder for us to qualify for the CL. You'd think the teams like Napoli and Fiorentina, who sometimes make CL but not always, would try in the UEFA Cup to try and get Italy the 4th spot back. It would make it easier for them to make the CL then. So dumb.

It's not like Napoli and Fiorentina didn't try this time around. They were just unlucky.
