Sao weren't that bad, 30-odd goals in 3 years. He was only 21 when he joined as well. And of course
that goal!Rooney takes most yeah, Drogba shares with Lampard I think. Most top scorers take penalties though, Tevez being another. People also seem to be missing the fact that Bent is **** at penalties, he seems to miss as many as he scores.
That's exactly what we need though. We've been screaming out for a greedy striker for years and since, you won't see someone like Nistelrooy getting assists either. We create chances, but no-one ever wants to shoot. Whenever we get to the edge of the box, suddenly we think we're Arsenal but just end up passing it backwards. Far too often Carew's too lazy to get in the box or Gabby has drifted out wide, but with Bent in the box, it'll make the job of the wingers much easier. He's got every chance of flopping for us, but then it's more likely that he'll continue the way the rest of his career has gone and get us 15 or so goals a season.
Haha, I remember him from when I first began to watch football properly, the years of him Asprilla, Srnicek, Poborsky all that lot! Back when football was always enjoyable to watch, when teams used to want to attack!
Wayne does now, though CR7 would have been the #1 for quite a while I guess. I heard that it was 15 goals from pens that Bent has scored from the figure getting branded around - the one comparing him to Drogba & Rooney. I also heard that in his time at Sunderland he's only got one assist, surely that's not true?!

It was entertaining to watch! Though those teams would get smashed nowadays, there was only a handful of teams, like Arsenal, that could actually defend.

15 penalties is quite alot. I presume that means in the last 5 years if it's to do with the Rooney/Drogba thing? 3 penalties a year isn't a massive amount, probably means he's missed a few though as well because only getting 3 penalties in a season isn't many.
I'd read that as well. 1 assist isn't very good in 18 months really is it! I don't care how **** other stats are so long as he's putting the ball in the net though. Should make Saturdays game against Citeh a sell out as well I imagine, could be a good atmosphere.. until we get hammered again.

Tell me about it, I don't know I've certainly not lost my love of the game it's just plateaued in these past few years. Now, I'm not expecting a 3-3 every game but there are so many times I sit to watch a match and the urgency is just not there anymore. I'm interested in the art of defending (used to be a GK) though when there are tackles being made to stop attackers coming through or defenders playing well, not as a whole team 10 men behind the ball unit.
The WC summed up my feelings of the game, the way it's changing to the mentality of lets not lose, rather than lets win bar a few teams is a bit frustrating. I think that's why I've picked up more on other sports that I used to watch but never religiously followed properly before like the NFL/NHL.
I still love watching teams like Arsenal & Barca, because they go at people in the main and play absolutely world class football when they want to. Recent games have got a bit better again, hopefully that will continue.

Yes, I'm pretty sure that figure is over 5 years not like Andy Johnson when he had his top-scoring record and 95% were penalties
True, just hopefully he bangs them in for your lot as I do like Villa as a neutral, just as you're well aware not particularly fond of Houllier! Will Makoun play? Interested to see how he does in this league.
Should be a sell out no doubt City will bring their new man in Dzeko too. Makes up for flop of the season so far in Balotelli. I know he scored a hat-trick against you but that was 2 penalties and a tap-in. So far he'd be my pick for flop signing of the season bearing in mind his fee. Closely followed by Squillaci, this guy simply cannot defend in the EPL. VDV would be the opposite to me, signing of the season so far again when you account for what he cost Spurs.

I'd agree with van der Vaart being signing of the season so far. Milner would have to be up there as a flop, though that's more on the manager playing him out of position. Ireland for us as well, dreadful player, never puts in any effort either.
Not sure if Makoun will play, don't think his work permit has gone through yet - no idea why these things take so long.

Arsene taking the Cups seriously this year, strong team out again.
Sunderland clutching at straws accusing us of tapping up Bent as he's been 'terrible for months' apparently, they reckon we were ther reason he handed in a transfer request in the summer too. Funny really, considering we've had 3 different managers this season, have all 3 tried to tap him up then?

Apparently there's 'no other reason' as to why he would leave them for us.
1 trophy in 38 years and a best finish of 13th in the best decade begs to differ. Even small heath have acheived as much as that!

Playing Nasri against a Championship side is cheating this year! Fair play to Leeds again, hope they get in the Prem as oppose to teams that aren't even English...
This was obviously what they were always going to come out with, due to the fact he's been playing so badly. They don't suddenly want a mass exodus now, though with Wellbeck and Gyan they certainly won't be terrible up front without him.
kurtsimonw
Jan 20 2011, 09:47 PM
Their logic is so flawed though. They're saying we illegally approached him in the summer - which is he supposedly handed in his transfer request - then they talked him out of it. Surely if that were the case he would have been bad all season? Yet he started off the season awesome and bagged his first England goal.
They're just making themself look small time throwing a strop. I could understand them being pissed if was played out in the media for a while like the Barry and Lescott transfers because that isn't good form. Sometimes you have to accept it though, like with Milner leaving us, City did nothing wrong and we understood he was going to leave and that's that, everyone stood up and applauded him when he was subbed. Bent is the same, gone there done a fantastic job and made them a big profit.
This just stinks of them not used to having a star and now they've lost him they're throwing a little hissy fit at big bad Villa.
Agreed on the Championship, don't want Cardiff up.

It's probably because of the transfer request, fans hate it. I don't get it at times like I was speaking to a Leeds fan who was on a mad one because Beckford left, I mean after what he did for them. I guess they've forgot about people like Harry Kewell, very quickly.
I'm pretty sure Sunderland have had just as big, if not bigger players than Bent in the past, but I know what you're getting at.

Yeah fans are very fickle, hero to villain within seconds.
It's Bruce that's the worst, how can he call Bent disloyal? I don't think there's another manager that's walked out on a club when a better offer comes along more than him, he's as bad as Redknapp in that respect.
United still unbeaten, anyone reckon they'll go the whole way? I agree with Ray Parlour in that it'd be more impressive than when Arsenal did it because of the strength of the league. I can't see them doing it though.

Just saw Holloway on SSN and he started off sensible by saying he understands big clubs will come in for players so it doesn't surprise him that Villa are in for Adam, then he got silly. I didn't hear exactly what he said because of his accent, but he said he was worth £4m-£6m (or £46m!?).. so how exactly is our £3.5m bid 'derisory' if £4m
is acceptable? If he did say £46m though, that's just being silly! Then he went on to say if Makoun is worth £5m and considered better than Adam he may as well not bother anymore. Is this the same Adam that wasn't good enough for Rangers? Whilst Makoun is playing regular CL football at Lyon! Me thinks it's them wanting to try and push the price up and get interest, why else are they so desperate to make the bud public?
John Carew had a medical at Stoke for a loan move there, turning down Blues and West Brom. Be a shame when he leaves as he's been a huge fan favourite and top player the last few years. Shame his performances this season have been so bad.

My thoughts exactly.

There's also a little bit of difference between walking out as a manager and getting £18m for a player leaving.

He said, ‘Well, my agent says they want me.' So someone is talking to someone. I could say they [Sunderland] have done the same thing to Darren Bent because his agent has obviously been talking to someone at Sunderland to know they are interested. So if they are mentioning Darren Bent, why are they mentioning Darren Bent? Is someone upsetting Darren Bent?”
And Steve Bruce is accusing us of doing the same. We're not all as low as you potato head. Even if we had tapped him up (yeah, like that wouldn't have got into the media?), at the very worst we're taking Bent from them in the way they took Bent off Spurs.

God knows how Villa won it, but as I say luck evens itself out, especially when you sit on the ball and it cannons off the post
For all Silva and co are hyped about Man City never look dangerous until they bring Adam Johnson on. Mancini, just because he's English and didn't cost that much doesn't mean he has to be put on the bench...

That's exactly why we signed him. Too many strikers we've had drift out wide or aren't in the box. Before now nobody would have been there, but Bent's gonna live off those.

We definitely got lucky with that chance, luck nowhere near evened itself out though over the 2 games!
To be honest, they weren't that good. The posession was even 45%-55% in their favour, hardly dominating. I think Hart had more saves to make than Friedel as well.
James Collins though, what a beast when he's on form!

Far too negative, that's why they won't win the title. I do rate Silva very highly, but Johnson's just as good for them. Problem is he's trying to fit certain players into the team and it ruins the shape.. where was the width on their left? Tevez was drifting in all game and Kolarov was pretty much trying to play left back and left wing on his own.
De Jong/Barry/Yaya in the middle is just silly. I know Yaya's been better this season getting forward, but for crying out loud, you have the reigning PFA Young Player of the year on the bench who you just paid £30m for, who was oustanding as a box-to-box, creative, midfielder last season! He's played 1 game at CM this season as far as I know - scored 1 and set up 1!
QUOTE (Milan Are Brilliant @ Jan 23 2011, 10:23 AM)

Yeah he did very well. I thought his assist for Bent was a very good effort as well, think the comms. were over-critical of Hart because he only just managed to save the shot, forget pushing it out into a good position as well! Yesterday summed up why I think he's so great though, forget going forward, he's more than happy to track back as well. Great work ethic for a very attack minded player.
Though I've pretty much accepted we're going to lose him. As much as I think we're still a good club to be at, I think he's too good for us. On his day he'd walk into any side, in my opinion. I just hope that maybe the signing of Bent shows our ambition and he wants to stay. It's obvious he enjoys it here, but he must want to win things.
................................................................................
.................................................................................
.....
On the other games, how good did Arsenal and United look? I know they were both at home to bad teams, but 5-0 against a usually defensively solid Birmingham is a great win - they should have had more as well. Despite RvP scoring a hat-trick, the MotM for me has to be Al-Habsi the Wigan keeper, it could have easily been about 10 if it weren't for him.
Don't understand Newcastle at all. That's 2 games in a row they've lost the lead in the last minute because they've only had 2/3 players back. Surely that late on the priority has to be defend?
Milan Are Brilliant
Jan 23 2011, 12:37 PM
Well shots on target (according to BBC) was 8 for Villa, 14 for Man City. Off target was 2 for Villa, 10 for City. That's what I was more getting at as to why Villa were slightly fortunate, but still you need to hit the back of the net not the post or Friedel!
The narrowness is certainly a problem in most peoples eyes though I think Mancini likes playing like that hence the reason Johnson doesn't play as he is your typical winger. I mean Silva doesn't stay on the left he cuts inside most of the time. Perhaps with Balotelli back he will play him more on the wing, since the acquisition of Dzeko.
I can't see Milner being much more than a bench player for them, it's like what happened with SWP when he went to Chelsea. Not saying I agree with that but he probably isn't going to be in Mancini's ideal first XI, certainly at centre mid.
I didn't get the whole Hart should have done better thing I thought it was a good save. Mind you ESPN's commentary and overall presentation of European football is moronic, I'd rather listen to it in Japanese.
Hope he doesn't go to Liverpool if you do get rid of him, he deserves better than that. Would be good to see Fergie get him or something if anyone as he won't ruin or waste him.

The Bale hype is a piss take and only backs up my "if you play in London, you're automatically awesome" opinion.
Gareth Bale is having a good season, no question, but the hype is crazy. 1 assist this season as a winger. Admittedly I go on about Ash alot and what was he doing at 22 years old? Ashley Young at 22 was having his first full season at Villa in the Premier League, he got 8 goals and 17 assists - now that's what you call a winger. Did he get this sort of hype? Labelled the best player in the World? Did he hell.
Not sure why Holloway keeps going on about Adam. I don't even think Sidwell is a fair comparison, Sidwell was outstanding in his first EPL season and that's why he got a move to Chelsea. I really don't want him at Villa so hopefully we pull out, what I saw of him in yesterdays game watching Football First is that he makes Ronaldo look like a saint, just dives all over the place. £20m for Charlie Adam is just madness, Bent's a bargain buy if that's the case.
Milan Are Brilliant
Jan 23 2011, 01:34 PM
The fact he's British too, no-one would be getting this hype. If he was foreign everyone would be making a valid point, 2 games against a RB who clearly wants to be elsewhere does not make you world class. He was marked out of the game by Rafael twice, Phil Neville etc. He doesn't really possess anything apart from pace, but he doesn't run with the ball like Kaka used too he is literally a kick and run player, there are players in the lower divisions who can do exactly the same! There have been moments of class, I remember a volley at the start of the season. Though, this doesn't suddenly make you the best in the world, before this season people were doubting if he would ever fulfil his potential!
Young got a bit of raving, but not to the extreme of Bale. The thing that gets me is the media over here, if Bale does that against Inter they are quality, exceptional. Yet before any English team plays an Italian team it should be a walk in the park seems to be the general consensus. Apart from Wilkins and Gullit the morons on our TV say the same old stuff, defensive, slow, older players, Italian mentality. That's like me saying yeah, United? Those the ones who play with Yorke & Cole upfront and that super sub yeah? I wish the pundits wouldn't talk about Italian teams when quite clearly the only ever time they seem them is in the CL when they play English sides.
He hasn't said £20m but he keeps going on about Bent and saying the fees offered at the moment are a joke. There's definitely some premise that he wants around that figure. I was saying about Sidwell, because Sidwell had the sort of same timescale when he was good. I mean Chelsea got Sidwell on a free, but I doubt Coppell would have been expecting much more than what's being offered for Adam, even if he was under contract. Holloway is starting to annoy me now, thinks he's a bit 'big-time' because of this season in the EPL, starting to tarnish the way I think of Blackpool.

He simply isn't strong enough to manage in the Premier League. Anything he does that's questioned, he just throws a little tantrum.
He has a bit of Redknapp about him too. Apparently he put in a bid for Bradley Wright-Phillips the other day, which was well below the money you'd expect him to be sold for. But as a former manager, he knows that Plymouth are in the shite when it comes to finances and they will pretty much be forced to sell. It's a disgusting tactic really.
He's not classy either. When he was slagging off our bid for Adam he came out with something like "They've just bought that lad, Makoun, from France for £5m. Are they trying to tell me he's worth more than Charlie?". No, clearly an international with 50+ caps, someone who's played at a high level in the Champions League and won a league title in a respectable league is not better than someone who has played a few months in the Premier League after not being good enough for Glasgow Rangers.

Late game today Blackburn 2-0 West Brom. Brilliant.

Yeah, apparently Wright Phillips wanted to go to Reading though, but failed a medical or something, Blackpool are really big then! Though I think that might be to do with Rangers bidding like £300k for him which for Plymouth gets them out of all sorts of financial problems.
Blackpool fans are a little bit arrogant as well now, was speaking to one the other day and he was like 'Oh, I don't watch the lower leagues, don't need too, don't care about it'. Yeah, because your a massive club right?! That's one thing that gets me with Premiership fans the majority just slag off the lower league teams. So, if I were to say I support Barca one day I can slag every other team off yeah?! Morons.

Yeah most EPL fans tend to just ignore the lower leagues. The to be fair, it's generally the fans of newer EPL clubs that tend to act that way, it's like they feel they're too good for lower leagues now their team isn't there.
Admittedly I only watch EPL and the Championship, but I watch The Football League show every week so I know at least some of what is happening in lower leagues.

You hear about Keys/Gray? Funny how everyone is jumping on them about an off-air comment. These people don't realise that BSkyB has pretty much made the Premiership what it is today, with money, broadcasting etc. Everyone makes comments like that at football grounds tongue-in-cheek, no-one really means anything about it. Exactly, aren't there shows on terrestrial TV that literally sit a bunch of women down to slag off men?! How is that not sexist then?!
Fans call refs, fat, bald, ginger, ugly during games it's all a bit of fun. Imagine if they say anything to a women ref. Banned for life.
If this is what happens, then there simply shouldn't be female refs. Part of football is the banter, you can't take it go find a different job. Sport is what sport is. I bet everyone in the pubs was saying the same thing and have now turned against Keys and Gray because they don't like them.
These guys should experience ESPN's coverage, or worse imagine what SkySports would be like if Chiles joined. I simply would cancel it then. Keys/Gray were wrong and they should apologise to the lineswoman face-face. They don't need to apologise to the nation. They make jokes all the time about other guys, nothing gets said. I heard on TalkSport about that Loose Women show which just Slavs men off and nothing ever gets said. This country is just way too PC and it's getting very old now. To be fair to the lineswoman, I don't think she's complained or anything, it's everyone else complaining for her. She was brilliant to be fair, got all the big decisions right.
I think more women would actually be a good thing. As bad as players might be when it comes to abusing refs, I just can't see them being the same way to a woman, so it's help the respect campaign.
ESPN is a bit annoying, Craig Burley annoys me more than anything. He's so biased towards the top clubs and does anything to dismiss anyone else. Like Villa only got the win because of a 'Hart error and City not taking their chances'.
When Setanta came out and they had a tonne of girls on, Sky Sports told their presenters to 'sex it up' so it does make them seem a bit silly getting all defensive over comments made about women now.

Do I agree with them - no, not really. If she's been trained to do the job, then her ability shouldn't be called into question because of her genitals.
But at the same time much of the offence was being taken on her behalf.

Who's going to do the analysis now Jamie 'I love my cousin & agree with everyone' Lampard?

If they'd have sacked Gray for the Sian Massey incident then I wouldn't have minded so much, but it's the fact they've now gone back in time to find an excuse to. Hopefully Andy sues Sky for breach of confidence, off air comments being recorded is a bit if a disgrace. Also going back to what we said yesterday regarding womens tv, they've said much worse than Gray about men and get applauded for being up front and honest, complete joke.
As for Charlotte Jackson, yes please. (do I get sacked from MF now?)

Both of them have done so much for SkySports. It was with Charlotte Jackson, you ever seen 'Take It Like A Fan' before? She's on that and she does the Champions League stuff, pretty much the head girl now since Georgie Thompson turned to other things. The Daily Mail said she was disgusted though from seeing the video she seemed to have taken what Gray said as a joke.
The other one was with some touchline presenter.
The problem for Sky now is double standards. I mean on Sky Sports News they don't hire unattractive girls do they? They don't exactly dress them up a lot of the time... Also, on Soccer AM you could class a load of things as sexist, is it because Hells Bells is on there that it's allowed? Didn't Yorkie have a slogan 'it's not for girls?' where is the line drawn? I don't get it.
There's also the issue of other matters. Why are women allowed to partake in sexist adverts 'Women are better drivers' and live on-air allowed to slag off men daily, 'Loose Women'.
It's not about the girl, I couldn't really care if it was a she refereeing or a he or a dog, it's just the furore around it when women do seem to get away with it a lot more.

This country is turning to shite lately. If it weren't for Villa I'd be long gone.

It's all true though, nothing I've said is made up.
I just hope SkySports replace him with somebody decent. As I said above Lineker would be my top choice, lets face it Sky have the money to get him. If they get Chiles (if Keys gets sacked), I will cancel, I'd rather watch it online in foreign than watch the worlds ugliest, most useless presenter. Why would you need to check your notes during an England game to find out who they were playing? Idiot.
I guess outside of that Kamara could be quite a laugh. Though it would remind me of a TV show hosted by Kris Akabusi, nothing would ever work or go right especially if he had to use the Analysis board!
Just don't promote Redknapp. I don't care about him or what he thinks about Lampard, he's made more appearances for SkySports than he ever did on a football pitch. Ray Wilkins knows what he's on about. Same for Ballague but I can't imagine him doing all the English, European & Spanish stuff.
To me they have to bring someone in to replace him. Who's a big name, because like him or not this leaves a massive gap in SkySports Broadcasting at the moment.

More of a Georgie Thompson man myself

James Ruchardson would be my #1 choice. The man knows his stuff and generally speaking isn't biased at all.
I don't care much for Richard Keys. I remember when we relegated Coventry he slagged us off at every opportunity for years through nothing but bitterness. The man is a ****.

James Richardson, good shout. Though is he just in the know for Serie A? The thing is we need a co-commentator, someone who can co-present and analyse the game. That's what Gray did. That's why I'd gun for Lineker, Sky have got plenty of commentators that can step up, as long as it's not Don Goodman. I imagine it will be Alan Smith (Arsenal one!).
I quite like Keys, probably just because I couldn't imagine Premiership games without him, just as it's going to be wierd watching them without Gray from now on. Though if Lineker joined I wouldn't mind him got rid of.
Love how the press are trying to make Jackson out like this sweet innocent girl, pretty sure during her time at Sky Sports she was posing in a number of Lads mags with very little clothing. Typical media storm propaganda.

Richardson seems to have pretty good knowledge on the game altogether. He has a weekly podcast with some other bloke and it's a really good listen. Though I do think Richardson is more of a lead commentator, which Sky don't really need with Martin Tyler still there. Alan Smith I don't mind, being a Villa fan and all that!
Yeah it will be strange without Gray/Keys together. I just can't see Lineker on Sky personally!

Tyler seems to have weeks out left, right and centre though and only usually gets involved on a Sunday. Gray used to do a big percentage of games. I guess Alan Parry will be there main commentator, who I don't particularly mind.
I don't know, it will be like when Lynam moved to ITV. Though you know SkySports won't crumble and flop like that did. Imagine 'Jamie Redknapps: Last Word' what a joy that would be to watch

The money certainly wouldn't be an issue it would be whether Lineker wants to take on a lot bigger role, but get paid twice, 3 times as much.

I think Redknapp would be decent if he wasn't so overly biased. I do think he is fairly intelligent and I like them using former players (particularly ones that've played the game recently) as they understand how the game is first hand. He's just so OTT when it comes to Spurs, Chelsea and Liverpool though, ridiculous.
On another topic, long ball football..

Stratford Hoofspurs? Good to see us so low down the table, it's just like watching Brazil.

Boring, boring, City! Boring, long ball, rubbish. No wonder Hleb's constantly slagging them off.

Madrid have signed Adebayor.
Good to see Villa low down that table, or does that just mean they don't pass?!

I don't know Redknapp makes dumb comments, and agrees with everyone. I don't even think he knows quite how to use the phrase 'literally'. If he was a decent footballer I'd agree, but he was on the pitch as much as Anderton. To interested in modelling and his celeb wife. The only person I'd pick him above is Chiles.

You sound like a Villa fan. "The only reason we're so low on the table is because Stan 'the crab' Petrov can't pass the ball forwards, Reo-Coker can't pass the ball at all and Albrighton/Young just run with it!"
Friedel; Cuellar, Collins, Dunne, Baker; Young, Makoun, Reo-Coker, Downing; Agbonlahor, Bent. Subs: Marshall, Herd, Pires, Petrov, Albrighton, Heskey, Delfouneso.
Debut's for England U19 captain Nathan Baker and new signing Jean Makoun. Worrying that we have no defender on the bench, but Luke Young, Ciaran Clark and Kyle Walker are all bloody injured. Interested to see how Baker gets on as his best position is probably CB. Not holding my breath on a good stream though.

Try
myp2p.
Should get Halling to replace Gray, clearly knows his football and could make shameless plugs to getting more people into the NFL! Switching on Sunday's could be interesting though!
Another one to add to the sexism debate is Jo Brand. She should be cut by ofcom after this.

Will do, I'll try that and that atdhe place!
Yeah I like Halling, that wouldn't be a bad idea.
Jo Brand is terrible for it yes, but because she's a 'comedian' (and I use that word very losely in this case) it's allowed. Quite a few people jumping to the defense of Gray saying that it's really a terrible way for Sky to treat him after 20 years of service. He is arguably the face of Sky Sports to be honest and they've got rid of him pretty quickly for something very minor. A telling off and a public apology would have been enough.

What's atdhe?
Halling is quality, though I don't think he'd suit the style of the way the Football is presented. Plus, he wouldn't have a robot in Van Pelt sat next to him!
The thing is what Gray has been sacked over is him attempting to be funny, off-air. In that context he wasn't a football pundit, but an attempted comedian! Yeah, I believe so, same with Keys. I just don't know if there is some underlying factor in all this, I mean it's a bit coincidental how all this stuff got leaked in a matter of days. Someone up top wanting him out, perhaps?

Yeah there's probably something that isn't public knowledge. Charlotte even laughed at the time so she couldn't have thought it was that bad.
Bent just missed a shot FFS, Houllier out.
