Queiroz Hits Out At Madrid, SpainManchester United assistant Carlos Queiroz has launched a further attack on Spain and Real Madrid over what he believes are attempts to "naturalise" Cristiano Ronaldo...
The Portuguese coach, who is Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant at Old Trafford, drew a bizarre comparison between the player and Christopher Columbus.
In an ongoing transfer saga, Real Madrid have made no secret of their desire to recruit Ronaldo, prompting United to announce this week that they are considering reporting them to FIFA.
And Queiroz believes that his former club’s outspoken pursuit of his compatriot is about more than their wish to snap up the gifted winger, who scored an incredible 42 goals last season, claiming it is part of the long historical rivalry between Portugal and Spain.
According to the Daily Mail, he raged, "Cristiano Ronaldo will never be Spanish! As they will never take Olivenca again," to Portuguese newspaper Jornal do Noticias, referring to the small town on the disputed border between the two countries.
"They already did the same with Christopher Columbus, and it now seems they want to naturalise Cristiano Ronaldo," added the United number two.
"Have they already forgotten what we did to them in the past? We will never lose our patience.
With Portugal preparing for Euro 2008, Queiroz feels that the speculation involving Ronaldo's future could not have come at a worse time for the player or his national team.
"It's being done in a manner to distract the Portugal team, at the height of their preparations for the European Championships," he stated.
"But I am convinced that despite pressure from the Spanish sporting press he will not accept to change his nationality.
"However, it is an attack with a well-defined strategy and Portugal should be worried about that."
goal What a lame response! What do Spain and Portugal have to do with this? Queiroz seems to really be negative to whatever Madrid do ever since he left... not that what they do regarding CR is not loathsome. Like SAF said, there are obviously more teams other than Madrid that are after CR but you don't hear them talking about it publicly day after day...
